Gold Torah scrolls Mazel Tov greeting card

What to Write in a Bar or Bat Mitzvah Card

Writing a Bar or Bat Mitzvah card does not need to feel formal or intimidating. A warm congratulations, a personal detail and a wish for the years ahead make a thoughtful message. If you are staring at a blank card, start with “Mazel Tov” and speak directly to the person being celebrated.

A simple message that works for either celebration

Use their name, congratulate them on the occasion and finish with a wish. These examples are starting points you can adapt:

  • “Mazel Tov on your Bar Mitzvah, [name]! Wishing you a wonderful celebration and a future filled with kindness, curiosity and joy.”
  • “Mazel Tov on your Bat Mitzvah! We are so happy to celebrate this special milestone with you.”
  • “Congratulations on this meaningful day. May the years ahead bring you good friendships, happy memories and opportunities to do things you love.”

From a grandparent, aunt, uncle or close family friend

A family message feels more personal when you name a quality you have noticed. Think of their patience with a younger sibling, their sense of humour or the effort they put into something important to them.

“Mazel Tov, [name]! Watching you grow into such a thoughtful person has been a joy. We are proud of your hard work and cannot wait to see where your interests take you next.”

Instead of simply writing “we are proud,” add one sentence explaining why. That is the part they may enjoy reading again later.

When you do not know the recipient well

You can keep the message short and sincere. There is no need to invent a personal memory or use religious wording that feels unfamiliar.

“Mazel Tov on your special day! Thank you for including us in your celebration. Wishing you and your family so much happiness.”

A note to the parents

Keep the main message addressed to the young person. If you also want to acknowledge their parents, add a separate line: “Mazel Tov to the whole family—it is lovely to share this celebration with you.”

Choosing a Bar or Bat Mitzvah greeting card

Choose a design that suits the recipient rather than relying only on traditional colour choices. Torah imagery, gold details or a colourful design can all provide a thoughtful setting for your own words.

Russell Jeffrey Design cards are hand-embellished in Canada. Choose a blank-inside design and make the message yours: a few honest sentences are enough.
